CII is organising the Global Summit on Skills Development: Building People – Building India – Building Skills: ‘Celebrating Vishwakarma Divas’ on 17 – 18th September 2008 at New Delhi to build on from CII’s International Skills Conclave in December 2007.
The International Conclave on Skills Development 2007 clearly highlighted the need for a congregated effort in skills delivery. The conclave not only pointed the relevance of skills in sustainable growth, but also the importance of international cooperation. Speakers from across the skills spectrum spoke of the needs & opportunity for skills development in India.
The theme of the Global Summit is Celebrating Vishwakarma Divas. Vishwa karma Divas – The National labour Day of India – is celebrated by technicians across the country. The day is celebrated by all workers including blacksmiths, Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, Musicians, etc. The celebration involves decorating & worshipping tools & equipments & offering prayers to the Indian God of Skills – Lord Vishwakarama, the Architect of the Universe. Vishwakarma puja (prayer) is an inspiration for many, especially the working class to resolve to create new products and increase their productivity.
CII has aligned the Global summit on Skills Development 2008 with this very important day to:
- Recognize the unorganized sector.
- Make skills development inclusive.
- Extend skills development services to the workforce at all levels.
- Make growth inclusive.
- Enhance respect for Labour.
- Bring Social appreciation to all skills.
Objectives of the Summit: In an attempt to find answers to the above questions & to start discussions on the next level of skills development - implementation & delivery – the Global Summit on Skills development 2008 comes with the following objectives:
- Highlighting success stories & innovative practices from India & Abroad.
- Discuss the roles of the National Skills Corporation. Generating Rs. 15,000 crores – who & how?
- Develop understanding on using available PPP models: Upgradation of 1396 ITI scheme,
Modular Employable Scheme, Initiatives of other central ministries.
- Explore the world of WorldSkills Competitions. Readying India for Calgary,2009.
- Sectoral need analysis – Understanding skill
